DESCRIPTION:
This is how much car you should expect for ,000 today.
From Peugeot, with 90 years of leadership in automotive technology, comes the 505 SR. So high is its quality —and so well is it equipped — that some observers think it may well be undervalued in today’s market.
A car with steering that “knows” when to step in and help the driver in difficult situations...
A car with highly sophisticated dampening devices that treat bumps and potholes with contempt...
A car whose seats glide back and forth on tiny rollers instead of simple metal slides; you may not find more comfortable seats in any production car today...
A car which is not permitted to leave the factory until it has been subjected to a complete road trial by an expert test driver...
Such is the Peugeot 505SR.
Steering that “thinks”
Most power steering systems operate at the same power for slower speeds as for highway driving. But the steering on the 505SR has a graduated power assist.
At cruising speed, or if the road is slippery, it automatically cuts back on power.
The result is that you “feel" the amount of grip your tires have on the road. You have an extra margin of control.
The heart and soul of the car Ask Peugeot engineers to name yet another vital element of the 505SR, and they will point to the shock absorbers.
Peugeot’s dual function shock absorbers are designed with exceptionally complex valving to absorb the smallest
bumps and the largest potholes with equal ease.

Because of the arrangement of the
car’s suspension, the four wheels of the Peugeot act independendy of each other. A bump in the middle of a curve that would send most cars lurching sideways, will barely perturb the calm progress of the Peugeot 505SR.
Sinfully comfortable seats In its almost fanatical pursuit of comfort, Peugeot has abolished springs from its seats.
Springs tend to sag and can produce irritating oscillations. So Peugeot has replaced them with polymerized foam tuned to work in coordination with the car’s suspension so that you do not bounce around. You may not find a more comfortable seat in any production car today.
The driver of the Peugeot 505SR is supplied with a seat so adjustable it can be moved over 8 inches on its rollers... the back can be angled to 16 positions. The cushion can be angled for correct thigh support and raised for shorter drivers.
Brakes that “read” themselves The brakes on the Peugeot 505SR are disc brakes — on all four wheels —because discs
shed water and dissipate heat faster than drum brakes. An ingenious device “reads” how conditions are affecting the rear wheels. If necessary, pressure to the rear brakes will automatically be corrected to help prevent the rear wheels from locking and skidding.
A back-up hydraulic system is ready to take over if the first one should fail.
The body of the Peugeot 505SR has been designed with sections that fold into each other to help absorb impact.
Lights, wipers, washers, cruise control,
horn and turn signals are all located around the steering column.
Quiet power The 505SR is powered by a remarkable 4 cylinder engine displacing 1971 c.c. and producing 93 horsepower DIN at 5,000 rpm. The engine is inclined at 45 degrees to save on hood space, and it is equipped with a dual venturi carburetor.
Without having to show off its power, the 1,400 kg. 505SR quietly asserts itself on the road, displaying great acceleration and response, all with amazing energy efficiency: 8.4 L/100 km (33.6 miles per gallon) on the highway.*
Luxury is standard. Over and above the technical advances we have already cited, the 505SR offers an incredible number of luxury touches as standard equipment. These include: electric sunroof, cruise control, electric windows, central door-locking system, tachometer (with manual transmission), quartz clock, central console, individual front seats, ventilation through eight oudets, four of them adjustable.
21 anti-rust measures to protect it from rust, every Peugeot body is treated with phosphates and then totally immersed in an electrically charged bath. A special anti-corrosion wax is then injected into hidden hollow sections to prevent rust from forming there. The lower body is treated with an anti-gravel compound to shield against chipping.
At a separate anti-corrosion factory, a rubber based compound is sprayed all over the underbody. These are just a few
of 21 anti-rust measures Peugeot takes to protect its cars from rusting.
Someone has driven your Peugeot Yet another tell-tale of quality: Peugeot maintains a 75 member team of test drivers whose job it is to take every car after it leaves the assembly line and give it a final test on a special test track.
The drivers wUl test the steering, brakes, lights, engine performance, transmission, and suspension. Listen for ratdes and vibrations. Check the instruments and controls. Try the heating and air-conditioning systems.
A rarity today, this final road testing costs a small fortune. Peugeot, with a shrug, accepts the expense as indispensable in maintaining quality.
The Peugeot Lion
The lion has represented Peugeot since 1858, when the company was in the business of making such things as corset stays, work tools, and clock springs. The lion was chosen to symbolize the three main qualities of Peugeot’s steel saw blades: their strength, their sharp teeth, their cutting speed.
Peugeot went on to build the first car ever sold commercially (1891)... the first station-wagon (1894)... the world’s first diesel-powered car (1922)... and the first high rpm diesel engine (1967).
“Free” extra power: the Peugeot turbocharged diesel.
A tiny turbine blows a 900 km/h whirlwind to pack the Peugeot 505SR Turbodiesel with power.
The result? More passing power, yet the miserly thirst of a diesel engine.
The source of this extra power is free. The turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases that would otherwise be expelled through the tailpipe and disappear into thin air.
A bonus for city drivers: the Peugeot Turbodiesel engine uses 75% less fuel at idle than a gasoline engine.
The car that is a benchmark This, then, is the Peugeot 505SR. It is made in Europe. It is designed for safety and tested for durability. It is inordinately comfortable. It is how much car you should expect for ,000 today.
